Q: How do I become a member?
Membership in the Writer’s Den is fairly subjective– there’s no form for you to fill out, no minimum number of meetings/events/animal sacrifices for you to attend, and no particular color we wear on Wednesdays. Being a member means what YOU want it to mean. If you attend every meeting but don’t have time to volunteer or participate in events, that’s fine! If you attend meetings sporadically, volunteer often, and participate in all of our events, that’s also fine! There are plenty of ways to get involved, and if you feel like you are part of the Writer’s Den, then you are. :^)
Q: When/where are meetings?
Meetings are held every Tuesday at 7 pm in Boelter 5252.
Q: Is volunteering mandatory?
A: Nope– volunteering is super fun, and we hope everyone tries it at least once, but we also understand that many of you can’t make it to any of our sites because of schedule conflicts, and that some of you are simply not interested in volunteering with us, and both are okay. 🙂
Q: Do you guys help with writing/editing/proofreading papers and assignments for class?
A: We don’t, but there are at least two free on-campus resources for writing help: the Undergraduate Writing Center (located in the Humanities building), which focuses specifically on academic writing, and the Writing Success Program (located in the Student Activities Center), which provides counseling for both academic and creative writing. Both resources are completely free & have awesome, highly trained staff to help you be the best writer you can be. (If there are any other on-campus resources for writing help, let us know at firstname.lastname@example.org!)
Q: Does the Writer’s Den have a publication?
A: Our main focus is on providing a community for UCLA writers, and we feel that having a publication isn’t in line with the goals of the club. There are, however, several student-run publications on campus! For those of you interested in publishing your work outside of campus, here are some online resources with more information about the process.
Q: How can I get more involved?
A: A few ways to get more involved are volunteering with us (if our regular times don’t work for your schedule, stay tuned for upcoming collaborations with other service groups), contributing to the blog, or simply attending more meetings & events. If you’re interested in doing something with the Writer’s Den other than the above, get in contact with us– we’re always open to new ideas.
